The Rhiw, Bridgend

The development at The Rhiw is the £9 million mixed use development on the site of the former car park in the centre of Bridgend.

This scheme comprised of the demolition of the existing car park and construction of retail, apartments overlooking the Rhiw and a new multi storey car park to the rear of the site. We worked closely with Asbri planning and Coastal Housing in providing a successful noise assessment for inclusion with the planning application to meet the clients and local authorities requirements.

The site is located in the centre of Bridgend with local and distant transportation noise sources affecting the site and also pedestrian noise. We carried out a detailed noise survey of the existing sources and an assessment of the potential noise sources affecting the development and the existing noise sensitive receivers in the area. The noise impact assessment was based on the methodology of Technical Advice Note 11 (TAN11) Noise Exposure Category affecting the dwellings, internal ambient noise level control measures to achieve the requirements of British Standard 8233:2104 (BS 8233:2014) and also plant noise control measures as per British Standard 4142:2014 (BS 4142:2014).

At the detailing stage we assisted Kier and Holder Matthias Architects with the internal sound insulation advise with the aim of meeting the Coastal Housing acoustic performance requirements which are over and above Approved Document ‘E’ of Building Regulations 2003.

In the first instance we helped develop the proposals with the Architect to ensure a robust design with good acoustic performance. After the tendering stage we assisted Kier with the evolved design based on sub contractors details and proposals.

The development is a commonly an increasingly common construction methodology comprising of a steel frame structure with light weight walls, composite concrete floors and in situ slabs. The scheme has been carefully detailed and is due for handover in the coming months.
