Mixed-use redevelopment at Albert Hall, Swansea

The disused Albert Hall Grade II listed building in the heart of Swansea was to be transformed into a mixed use space. It would include an entertainment venue with a food court and cocktail bar, as well as a gym, studios, serviced apartments, and an office and meeting room space.

Our local acoustic consultants were brought onto this project from RIBA Stage 3 (Spatial Coordination) onwards. The scope of work included determining an appropriate acoustic performance specification for each space.

We provided a noise impact assessment for planning, as well as design advice for internal sound insulation for all aspects of the project.

Together with the client and design team, we developed a sound insulation criterion uplifted over Building Regulations that would accommodate the development’s various uses.

Along with internal acoustics and reverberation control, the scope also addressed building services noise, including in-duct noise control details and cross-talk requirements. This ensured the internal acoustic environment was suitable for each sensitive area.

With a large range of Use Classes within the scheme, our sound testing experts also considered external plant noise emissions from rooftop plant units. We undertook noise modelling of the plant to provide insertion noise requirements for plant units that ran 24/7.

And since project inception, we were appointed to carry out noise monitoring during the build. We did so in real time via our cloud service, and provided weekly reports with each week’s data analysis through to project completion.

Residential care home on Free Street, Brecon

Wales & West Housing and their development consultants Asbri Planning contracted our noise assessment team to support a full planning application for a four-storey residential care home.

We were brought in from the very start of the project and continued to deliver sound testing and advice through to RIBA Stage 5 (Manufacturing and Construction).

The client wants to achieve an uplift over Building Regulations in their sound insulation design and performance. So our noise assessment services also included Approved Document E advice.

We carried out a noise impact assessment to BS8233 and BS4142 for noise ingress and potential noise pollution from associated plant units.

Our noise survey team also undertook research into non-traditional construction techniques of separating walls and floors that the design team wanted to explore.
