In 2017, AKS Architects & Engineers appointed Acoustic Consultants Limited to carry out an assessment to address the noise climate affecting the proposed sports club, specifically noise from the Buffadero Military shooting range.
The proposed development comprised an underground car park with running track and football pitch above, sports stadium and internal swimming pool.
Our scope of works included assessing the impact of the Military shooting range to protect both the users of the sports arena and the operations of the military base. The assessment was completed in accordance with the WHO 1999, British Standard 8233:2014, and the Noise at Work regulations.
Using detailed noise survey data from the military shooting range we carried out a computer modelling exercise of the shooting operations within the 3D noise modeling software Cadna:A.
Working with the design team we advised on the effect of the installation of barriers between the sporting use and shooting range. The advice included recommendations on the barrier height, location and materials to achieve as low a level as possible within the sporting use.
Our resulting report was used in support of a planning application for the scheme with the advice followed through into the detail design and construction. The planning application was granted and the venue is currently hosting the Island Games 2019 which comprises of 14 different sports and the accommodation to house the 2500 athletes and officials.
The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo QC MP, said: “These arrangements represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to invest approximately £31m in the sporting infrastructure of Gibraltar. We have got a great deal for sport and for Gibraltarian sports men, women and children. This will be a magnificent legacy for many generations and is progress on a scale never seen before in Gibraltar’s sporting history.”
We are proud to have worked on this interesting project within Gibraltar and are pleased to see the venue is now in use for this prestigious event.
This project has increased our portfolio of recent work outside of mainland UK, these include multiple schools in Gibraltar, hi tech industrial and office facilities in Ireland and worship space in the Middle East.
