Evelina Children’s Hospital
Our advice provided the client with a performance requirement and design advice.
The Evelina London Children’s Healthcare is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
It is the second largest children’s hospital in London and it’s housed in a purpose-built, award-winning building, constructed in 2005 at a cost of £60m and is located alongside St. Thomas’ hospital.
The hospital’s vision is to be a world leading centre of life-changing care for children, young people and their families.
Galliford Try Building (Southern) appointed Acoustic Consultants Limited to provide noise and acoustic advice as part of the £25 million redevelopment works. The project scope areas included the refurbishment of the Medical Day Case on Level 1 and an open office floor at Level 6.
We developed the noise and acoustic requirements and design for the Level 6 critical care area, and Level 1 MRI area with wards, treatments, seminar, pre-assessment spaces, offices and other ancillary spaces. As the site is a refurbishment there were limitations on the acoustic performance that could be achieved on site we provided comprehensive advice to the design team to ensure they were aware of the risks and what measures could be provided to reduce the impact of a reduced performance.
The development was to be designed to achieve the requirements of HTM 08-01 and the main elements for consideration were as follows:
- Internal Ambient Noise Levels
- Building Services Noise Control
- Reverberation Time Control
- Internal Sound Insulation
- External Plant Noise Control
- Plant Vibration Control Measures
Our advice provided the client with a performance requirement and design advice for each of the elements noted above based on the HTM 08-01 requirements, baseline survey results, and existing and proposed construction information.
We worked closely with the design team including the Architect (Sonnemanntoon Architects) mechanical services consultant (Troup Bywaters) and the installer (Boon Building Services) to ensure the acoustic advice was within the current project scope with as minimal as possible upgrades in the design.
