The Learning & Research Building

The Learning & Research Building - Southmead Hospital, Bristol

This development provided accommodation for the university laboratory based research teams on both the Southmead and Frenchay Hospital sites.

The new building is over five storeys and contains offices, meetings rooms a cafeteria and laboratories. Additional learning and development facilities were provided to allow the transfer of the Trust’s previous facilities from the Academic Centre and Post graduate Centre at Frenchay Hospital.

This included an additional clinical skills laboratory and an expansion of the library. The building also provided accommodation for the Regional Quality Control Laboratory on the top floor.

Kendall Kingscott Limited appointed Acoustic Consultants Limited to provide advice on the noise and acoustic aspects of the building.

The scheme was required to achieve the credits of BREEAM 2011 ‘Other Buildings.

The following elements were addressed.

  • Internal Sound Insulation
  • Reverberation Time
  • External Noise Control
  • Plant Noise (potentially operating 24 hours a day)

Construction started in spring 2013, and the building was completed in March 2014.
