BS4142 Noise Impact Assessment

British Standard 4142:2014+A1:2019 – Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound is the UK’s primary guidance for evaluating the potential noise impact of industrial and commercial operations.

BS 4142 assessments are often a condition of planning consent across a range of sectors, including commercial, educational, healthcare, and increasingly residential—particularly where air source heat pumps or domestic ventilation plant are required.

Acoustic Consultants Limited provide expert noise and acoustic advice to support projects of all sizes, from single plant installations (e.g. air conditioning units, kitchen extraction systems) to complex mixed-use or industrial schemes involving extensive fixed and mobile plant, or renewable infrastructure such as battery energy storage systems (BESS) and solar installations.

We are experienced in supporting planning consultants, architects, developers, contractors, design teams, and private individuals with tailored BS 4142 assessments that align with their project’s specific needs. A typical BS 4142 assessment includes the following key stages:

Baseline Noise Survey

Most schemes require an environmental noise survey to establish representative background sound levels at nearby noise-sensitive locations. This data forms the foundation of the assessment and is typically gathered over one or more days, depending on the site context and local authority requirements. For retrospective applications or validation work, measurements of plant noise may also be taken directly on site. All of our environmental survey work is conducted using Class 1, type-approved sound level meters.

Noise Impact Assessment

Noise levels are predicted at noise-sensitive locations using both in-house calculation methods and proprietary software such as Cadna:A, following the methodology of BS EN ISO 9613-2:2024.

The noise impact is then assessed to BS 4142 – this involves determining the rating sound level by applying corrections for specific acoustic features such as tonality, impulsivity, or intermittency, and comparing it to the measured background sound level. Where the rating sound level is equal to or below the background sound level, this is often an indication that the level of noise impact would be low.

Mitigation Advice

Where necessary, we provide practical and appropriate mitigation advice to help reduce noise impact. This may include early-stage design input—such as repositioning or screening of plant—or more technical solutions including acoustic enclosures, silencers, barrier design, or operational restrictions. We have delivered BS 4142 assessments for a wide range of projects across the UK, offering clear, advice to support the needs of the client.

Some of our BS4142 Noise Impact Assessment Projects Include:

  • Plant and delivery noise assessments at 100s of Lidl stores UK-wide
  • Plant, operations and delivery noise assessments at numerous Regional Distribution Centers (RDC) across the UK
  • Assessment of solar and BESS plant at a Moto motorway services in the North of England
  • Detailed design advice to support a BESS development in the Scottish Highlands
  • Investigation and noise mitigation advice regarding a grain elevator at a large cereal factory in Wiltshire
  • Assessment of expanded operations of a cold logistics site in Wolverhampton
  • Assessment for the extension of a builders’ merchants storage yard in Haverfordwest, West Wales

Whether your scheme involves a single condenser unit or an extensive industrial facility, we would be please to assist with our decades of experience in commercial noise and acoustics.
